Clinical Trial Laboratory Compliance: CLIA Testing for Pharma Studies

Pharma sponsors need a CLIA-certified laboratory for trial tests whose patient-specific results are returned for diagnosis, treatment, eligibility or safety decisions. CLIA certifies the lab, not the drug. GLP under 21 CFR Part 58 covers nonclinical studies, so labs testing participant specimens for individual care follow CLIA instead.

The sponsor's CLIA questions

CMS applies CLIA when patient-specific results are reported and made available for diagnosis, prevention, treatment or health assessment (CMS: Research testing and CLIA (PDF)). For each protocol assay, sponsors should know:

  • Is the result returned to the investigator or participant?

  • Is the testing lab certified for that test's complexity?

  • Has the lab verified or validated the assay as used in the study (42 CFR 493.1253)?

  • Are state licensing rules met, including New York where applicable (New York lab licensing)?

GLP and CLIA, side by side

Sound Lab Consultants works on the CLIA side only.

Frequently asked questions

Does a drug trial need a CLIA lab?

For tests whose patient-specific results are used for diagnosis, treatment, eligibility or safety of participants, yes. Research-only endpoints not returned for individual care may fall outside CLIA.

Does CLIA apply to the drug?

No. CLIA applies to laboratories testing human specimens, not to drugs or their manufacture.

What is the difference between GLP and CLIA?

GLP (21 CFR Part 58) covers nonclinical studies supporting FDA applications. CLIA (42 CFR Part 493) covers labs reporting patient-specific results from human specimens.

Can you help our central or site lab get CLIA certified?

Yes. We help labs with CLIA certification, director services, validation guidance, QC and compliance oversight.

Do you provide GMP or manufacturing compliance services?

No. Our work is limited to CLIA, CAP and COLA laboratory compliance.
