Fertility Center Lab Consulting: CLIA Andrology and Reproductive Lab Accreditation

Fertility center andrology testing, such as semen analysis, is clinical lab testing under CLIA, so it needs a certificate, a qualified director, QC, proficiency testing and competency records. CAP offers a Reproductive Laboratory Accreditation Program covering andrology and embryology. Sound Lab Consultants works with fertility labs on CLIA compliance and accreditation readiness.

Andrology and CLIA

Semen analysis and related andrology tests examine human specimens to assess health, so they fall under CLIA (42 CFR Part 493; CDC: About CLIA). Depending on the method, testing may be moderate or high complexity, which affects certificate type, personnel and QC. Check complexity in the FDA CLIA test database.

Embryology

Embryology procedures handle gametes and embryos rather than producing diagnostic test results, and are commonly described as outside CLIA. They are still covered by accreditation standards, such as CAP's reproductive checklist, and by other federal and state rules. Confirm your obligations with your accreditor and state.

CAP Reproductive Laboratory Accreditation Program

CAP's program covers embryology, andrology, endocrinology, cryopreservation, reproductive cell and tissue storage, and preimplantation genetic testing. CAP inspects on site every two years. Eligibility includes labs that perform at least one embryology-related procedure, or semen analysis plus at least one other high-complexity test (CAP Reproductive Laboratory Accreditation Program).
