Remote Laboratory Management for CLIA Labs

Remote laboratory management means a qualified outside team oversees your clinical lab's compliance without being there every day. SLC provides it through lab director services, technical consultant services, and compliance oversight. Directors still make the onsite visits CLIA requires, and your onsite testing staff stay in place.

What SLC's remote oversight includes

  • Lab director services: a qualified CLIA laboratory director for your lab (details).

  • Technical consultant services: for moderate complexity labs (details).

  • Compliance oversight: QC, proficiency testing, competency, procedures, and inspection readiness.

  • New York: CQ-qualified laboratory director coverage is available. Ask about your lab's needs.

  • Billing: clinical lab billing support.

What CLIA requires onsite

Under 42 CFR 493.1407(c) (moderate complexity) and 493.1445(c) (high complexity), the laboratory director must be onsite at least once every 6 months, with at least 4 months between the two minimum visits, and must stay accessible to the lab for telephone or electronic consultation as needed. The director is responsible for the overall operation and administration of the lab, and stays responsible for every duty they delegate. One person may direct no more than five laboratories (§ 493.1407(d), § 493.1445(d)). Remote oversight does not replace the testing personnel, supervisors, or other people your lab's complexity and state require to be physically present.

Is remote management right for your lab? Checklist

  • ☐ You have qualified testing personnel onsite.

  • ☐ Your director or manager left, or you can't fill the job.

  • ☐ Your test menu is waived or moderate complexity, or a high complexity lab needs director coverage.

  • ☐ You need inspection or deficiency help.

  • ☐ You want predictable oversight costs instead of a new salaried position.
