Part-Time CLIA Laboratory Director for Your Lab
A part-time CLIA laboratory director is a qualified director who oversees your lab without being a full-time employee. CLIA allows this as long as the director visits at least once every 6 months, at least 4 months apart, stays accessible remotely, and remains responsible for the lab. One director can direct up to five labs.
Key Responsibilities of a Part-Time CLIA Lab Director
Regulatory Compliance: Part-time or not, the director is responsible for the lab's overall operation and administration under 42 CFR 493.1407 (moderate complexity) and 42 CFR 493.1445 (high complexity). SLC's part-time director keeps your lab aligned with CMS CLIA rules, your accreditor's standards (CAP or COLA), and your state's requirements.
Quality Management: The director must ensure quality control and quality assessment programs are established and maintained, and that the lab is enrolled in approved proficiency testing (§ 493.1445(e)(4)–(5); § 493.1407(e)(4)–(5)). SLC reviews your monthly QC logs, calibration and instrument maintenance records, and PT results, and documents corrective action when something is off.
SOP & Validation Oversight: CLIA requires the director to ensure test methods can deliver the quality patient care needs and that an approved procedure manual is available to staff (§ 493.1445(e)(3), (e)(14); § 493.1407(e)(3), (e)(13)). SLC's director reviews and approves your SOPs, method verifications and validations, including laboratory-developed tests.
Personnel & Competency: The director must employ qualified staff, make sure they are trained before testing patient specimens, and have policies for monitoring their ongoing competency (§ 493.1445(e)(11)–(13); § 493.1407(e)(10)–(12)). SLC verifies staff qualifications, signs off on training, and reviews competency assessments.
Consultation & Inspections: The director must make consultation available to the lab's clients on result quality and interpretation (§ 493.1445(e)(9); § 493.1407(e)(9)). SLC provides remote clinical and technical consultation and leads your lab through CLIA, accreditation, and state inspections.
Time Commitment & Structure
CLIA requires the laboratory director to be on-site at least once every 6 months, with at least 4 months between the two minimum visits, to document those visits, and to stay accessible to the lab for telephone or electronic consultation as needed (§ 493.1407(c); § 493.1445(c)). One person may direct no more than five laboratories (§ 493.1407(d), § 493.1445(d)).
Federal rules set no hours-per-month minimum. How much monthly time your lab needs depends on test volume, test complexity, and your accreditor and state, and we scope it with you during the consultation.
