Hire a Lab Director or Lab Manager in California (Los Angeles, Bay Area, Central Valley, Inland Empire, San Diego)
Updated November 2, 2026
California labs hiring a lab manager or director can budget against BLS figures: the May 2025 California median for medical and health services managers was $141,480. California adds state rules on top of CLIA, including Business and Professions Code 1209 on who may serve as laboratory director. SLC can cover director, technical consultant and compliance oversight remotely, with the onsite visits CLIA requires.
California pay benchmarks (BLS, May 2025)
Medical and health services managers: California median $141,480, California mean $159,170 (U.S. median $123,860).
Clinical laboratory technologists and technicians: California median $76,010, California mean $78,840 (U.S. median $62,930).
California lab leadership postings in fall 2026 include hospital clinical lab manager roles across Southern California, the Bay Area and the Central Valley, 24/7 core lab operations managers, and specialty roles such as microbiology lab manager. Most ask for a current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license, a bachelor's degree and several years of supervisory experience. Smaller labs and physician offices often post a "manager" role when what they need first is a qualified laboratory director and technical oversight.
California requirements
Who oversees labs: The California Department of Public Health's Laboratory Field Services (LFS) branch licenses and inspects clinical laboratories and licenses laboratory personnel in the state. Federal CLIA certification still applies.
Who can be the director: Under BPC 1209, a laboratory director is a licensed physician and surgeon or a person licensed to direct a clinical laboratory under the chapter. For waived testing only, the statute also lists other licensees, such as a licensed CLS. A director named on the CLIA certificate of a moderate or high complexity lab must also meet the CLIA director qualifications for that complexity.
Hospital labs: BPC 1209(h) says the director of each clinical laboratory of an acute care hospital must be a qualified pathologist, with limited exceptions when a pathologist is not available.
Duties: The director is responsible for overall operation and administration, may delegate duties to people qualified under CLIA, and stays responsible for them. For licensed labs, the director documents written duties for each person and the competency evaluations the statute lists: at least semiannually in the first year of testing, then at least annually. A director may direct up to the number of labs CLIA allows. See our California laboratory director requirements and California personnel licensing pages before you finalize a hire.

Remote oversight for California labs
Under 42 CFR 493.1407(c) (moderate complexity) and 493.1445(c) (high complexity), the laboratory director must be onsite at least once every 6 months, with at least 4 months between the two minimum visits, and must stay accessible to the lab for telephone or electronic consultation as needed. The director is responsible for the overall operation and administration of the lab, and stays responsible for every duty they delegate. One person may direct no more than five laboratories (§ 493.1407(d), § 493.1445(d)). Remote oversight does not replace the testing personnel, supervisors, or other people your lab's complexity requires to be physically present.
